Species

There are many different "spoken" species on the world of Enfadis, each one with unique benefits and drawbacks. A "spoken" species is loosely defined as any sentient species capable of participating in and contributing to civilized society; this is obviously very vague and non-specific, which makes it easy for the people of Enfadis to be picky about what species they consider "spoken" or not. All species on this list are considered spoken by at least one prominent culture, though it is not all-inclusive of every theoretically spoken species.

Aasimar

Overview

People of holy or blessed descent, aasimar are bound to protect someone for their entire lives; whether or not they choose to embrace this destiny is up to them. At birth, every aasimar is metaphysically linked to someone born around the same time, known as their Ward. When the Ward dies, so does the aasimar.

Apperance

Aasimar, under normal circumstances, look nearly identical to the race of their non-angelic parent; however, they will have non-standard traits that make them stand out from others of their typical race. For example, an aasimar that has an elven parent would look largely like an elf. That said, aasimar have a few unique traits regardless of their heritage- that being their halo and their vestigial wings. These wings are too small to fly with, and are never directly on the aasimar's back.

Auran

Overview

The auran are an oft-misunderstood people due to their appearance. Some folk misunderstand them as the kin of dragons, while others assume they're related to demons or devils. Because of this, they tend to lead rather reclusive lives within groups of their own kind, though it's not unheard of for auran to venture beyond their homes to see the wider world. Men naturally outnumber women in a 3:1 ratio.

Apperance

Auran are humanoids that are known for their draconic traits. Although not as fully draconic as dragonborn, auran possess several dragon-like qualities such as scaled tails, horns, slitted irises, and patches of scales around their bodies. These scales are found most often in two varieties: the black scales of Miarya, and the ivory scales of Zieny. Auran have horns for ears, and these horns can take a variety of shapes.

Centaur

Overview

Centaurs are native to the plains of Mouveau where they can run free and wild. They are not monsters, but instead a civilized species of people that is oft misunderstood.

Apperance

They're centaurs, what more needs to be explained? They have equine lower bodies and humanoid upper bodies.

Changeling

Overview

A changeling is a strange fey being with the ability to shapeshift into other humanoids that it has seen. Due to their shapeshifting and notes from history, they are often mistrusted and will choose to keep their true identities a secret. No matter their apperance, a changeling is always identifiable by its leathery skin.

Apperance

A changeling has a "true" form that they are born with: pure white skin; sunken, pupil-less eyes; and whispy white hair. This form, however, is often quickly forgotten by the changeling and replaced with one taken from someone else. Changelings can take on the apperance of anyone they've seen in the past, though the more time spent around the person generally leads to a higher quality replication.

Dragonborn

Overview

A species of dragon-like people, Dragonborn are commonly viewed as strong and militaristic, willing to do anything for the sake of their cause. As a people, they often value community over the individual, and they're hard-set on their heritage and tradition. Family lineages are important to them, and family comes above all else. They have a stern rivalry with gnomes, but a loving relationship with kobolds.

Apperance

Dragonborn tend to stand anywhere from 5'6" to up to 7 feet tall, making them one of the tallest common races on Enfadis. They have bodies similar to most humanoids but with dragon-like heads, and some can be digitigrade and possess tails. They have scales which come in a variety of colors, all of which match the colors of pure dragons found across the world. These colors include black, blue, brass, bronze, copper, gold, green, red, silver, and white. They may also rarely be seen with purple or opalescent scales mimicking those of gem dragons.

Elf

Overview

A tall and oft graceful people, elves are often grouped into one of two stereotypes: the well-learned and elegant, or the lazy and reckless. They can live to be hundreds of years old, and they’re commonly seen pursuing greater knowledge. There are two common types of elves: sun elves and moon elves. There are also rumors of deep elves living deep in caverns beneath the world, though it's mostly just a myth.

Apperance

Elves are similar to humans in most regards, save for being slightly taller and having two diverging traits: pointed ears, and four-fingered hands. Being "long of ear" is a beauty standard in elven culture. Elves all only have four fingers as well. Sun elves tend to have dark brown or reddish skin with dark-colored hair, while moon elves tend to be much paler and more grayscale or bluish.

Gnome

Overview

Halflings are pioneers in the realm of self-expression, dyeing their hair and getting tattoos much more often than other species are known to.

Human

Overview

The most common species across Enfadis, humans are known to inhabit and blend in with almost any culture. Although some cultures have humans in higher majorities, they can be found across the globe.

Apperance

Humans are considered the "baseline" species due to their traits being prominent on almost all other species, minus some variation. Five fingers, rounded ears, flat feet, smooth skin... the list goes on.

Kobold

Overview

Kobolds are a strange people that often isolate to only speak with their kind or dragonborn. They live in small colonies across the globe, doing whatever they can to survive. They have a leaning towards working for dragons and other powerful creatures. Many large cities employ kobold colonies to keep the sewers and general underground of the city in tact.

Apperance

Tiny little things, kobolds often average around 3 feet tall. Much like dragonborn, kobolds are covered in scales; have draconic snouts, horns, fangs, and claws; and have tails. However, kobolds can rarely be hatched with wings; winged kobolds are called "urds." Kobolds are most commonly red, though they can be any variety of colors.

Leonar are large humanoids with lion-like features, including tawny fur, thick tails with fluffy tips, claws, and muzzles. Some individuals also sprout dark manes by the time they reach adulthood; this commonly happens to men, but it's not unheard of for women to grow them. Although similar to tabaxi, a leonar is easily distinguished from them by their larger frames and distinctly lion-like features; tabaxi never look like lions.

Marshwalker

Overview

A species of dinosaur-like humanoids, mirescales revel in enjoying their short lives and looking toward the future.

Apperance

Mireclaws are a short and lithe species of humanoid. More dinosaur than human, mirescales have long snouts, long legs, and stocky arms with strong sickle-clawed hands. Defensive scales cover most of their bodies, but they also have vibrant fringes of feathers that sprout around their eyes, neck, and chest. These feathers can also grow near joints and along the spine. They also have tails. There are two subgroups of mirescale: the Sauropoi and the Therospoi. Sauropoi have long necks and frills; they often have thick, stout limbs. Therospoi, in contrast, have shorter necks and more feathers; they have sharper teeth and keener vision.

Tabaxi

Overview

A species of cat-like people that are native to the lands currently claimed by the Kingdom of Seekliff. Known for their wanderlust and curiosity, Tabaxi wander the world in search of a life's purpose- and once found, they dedicated their lives to lovingly and passionately embracing their profession.

Apperance

Tabaxi come in a large array of shapes, sizes, colors, and patterns; however, they all have a few traits in common. All tabaxi have feline-like heads, cat tails, and digitigrade legs. Their hands are often described as "paw-like." Tabaxi can stand anywhere from 3'6" to 6' in height.

Almost all tabaxi have fur, which can come in a variety of colors and sporting various patterns. They often resemble existing species of feline, such as lions, tigers, leopards, and even house cats; however, they can also have unique patterns not seen on cats. They are also most often colored like feline species as well, commonly as brown, orange, gray, black, white, or beige. There are some tabaxi, however, that have been seen with colored fur that is not natural to felines such as blue or red.

The result of a cursed bloodline, Tieflings are found across the globe. They are regularly feared and hated against due to their infernal lineage. Tieflings can come from any other species, and they often resemble their parent species except with a more demonic appearance.

Apperance

Tieflings can come from any species, so describing their morphology is difficult. There can be tiefling gnomes or elves. It's also possible for a tiefling to appear in leonar and dragonborn families. No matter what species the tiefling is descended from, the traits that signal them as being a tiefling are universal. Below is a list of common tiefling traits:

  • Unnatural skin and hair/fur color
  • Devil-like tails with speared ends
  • A pair of horns protruding from the head, often from the forehead or top of the head
